On The Boardwalk…

As a child Summer meant the end of the school year and the always anticipated family vacation.  Usually we ended up in the middle of the woods, sleeping on the ground and fending off biting horseflies, snakes, and all kinds of other creepy crawlies.  One year, however, my Dad couldn’t get a lump of time off, and since we had recently moved to a new state within driving distance of something we had never seen before, we decided to spend each and every weekend at the Jersey Shore.  I was a kid who had never seen the ocean, much less swam in it.  I can remember the boardwalk carnivals near the beach, the cotton candy and the screams coming from the roller coasters.  The flashing neon signs advertising freak shows, and salt water taffy shops.  It reminds me that even the simplest thing can be a wonder if its a new experience.  It’s so very important to push our limits and break our barriers to face these new things.  I did that this summer when I drove by myself with two kids 14 hours to Florida so I could see the look on their faces when they saw the ocean for the first time.  Priceless…
